Dr. Alan Schefer, board certified orthopedic surgeon, is one of MKMG’s newest members, having joined the group late last year. He provides general orthopedic care and specializes in hand and microvascular surgery.
Dr. Schefer received his medical degree in 1990 from Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. In 1991, he completed an internship in general surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, where he conducted his orthopedic surgery residency for the next four years. He was named Chief Resident at Mount Sinai from 1994-1995, and he also completed a one-year fellowship in hand surgery at New York State University at Stony Brook in 1996.
Prior to joining MKMG, Dr. Schefer practiced for two years in Florida at the Orthopedic Center of Palm Beach County, Florida. There, he treated everything from sports injuries, accidents and trauma cases, to problems relating to the elderly. He also performed hand and upper extremity surgery.
"I came to MKMG because it offers a wide range of physicians in one, central place. I can refer patients to a physical therapist right here in the group, and the hospital is right around the corner. My patients can receive more convenient, efficient, high-quality care."
While he specializes in hand surgery, Dr. Schefer treats children and adults for all types of musculoskeletal problems, including arthritis, back pain, sprains and fractures. Common treatment includes a combination of limiting or changing certain activities, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medication and, possibly, surgery.
